Sania smashes 'hurtful' sex quote
In 2005, Sania Mirza strongly denied saying she supported pre-marital sex after remarks attributed to her sparked protests. She said her comments at a leadership summit in Delhi had been misquoted and that pre-marital sex was a sin Allah could not forgive. Mirza's effigy was burnt amid protests in her home state of Andhra Pradesh. She was quoted as saying that whether before or after marriage, the most important matter was that sex was safe.

Sania's 'un-Islamic' dress
The same year, security for her at a tournament in Kolkata was stepped up after rumours that a radical Islamic group had threatened to stop her playing in the tournament unless she changed her on-court dress. At the Delhi summit, Mirza also defended her dress saying that even if she wore a four-inch skirt, it was her decision and others should not have anything to do with it. Some groups protested over her dress, calling it 'un-Islamic'.

Sania ‘disrespects’ tri-colour
In January 2008, a case was filed against Sania in a court for allegedly disrespecting the national flag. The case was filed in the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insult to the National Honour Act of 1971 by a local resident. The complainant alleged that Mirza had disrespected the national Tricolour by putting her feet towards the flag during a function whose reports were carried in newspapers.

Sania shoots at Mecca Masjid
The shooting of a commercial advertisement featuring Sania Mirza at the historic Mecca Masjid in December 2007 sparked a row. Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and some locals objected to the shooting and Sania's participation in it. MIM legislator from Charminar Ahmed Pasha Khadri said while Sania was free to act in any commercial, the mosque could not be used for such activities.

Sania belongs to BPL family
Sania Mirza may be a millionaire but her face appeared on a ration card belonging to a below poverty line (BPL) family in Andhra Pradesh. The white ration card, which makes a family eligible to get rice at a highly-subsidised price of Rs 2-a-kg and social security benefits health insurance and a permanent housing, was issued to one Laxmi of Vizianagaram district with a photograph of Sania.
